family style guide

Elevating your family pictures with simple tips & creative inspiration

This guide is here to help you feel confident and prepared for your family pictures, from choosing outfits to getting the kids and spouse on board. My goal is to make your family photos as FUN and stress-free as possible, and a little planning ahead can go a long way.

Let’s make this easy, relaxed, and enjoyable for everyone. When it comes to choosing outfits, I recommend starting with the hardest person to dress first, and building everyone else’s look around them. Many times, that means to start with mom’s outfit and go from there.

Coordinate

Aim to coordinate and not match. Outfits photograph best when the color palette and clothing styles complement each other without being identical. Think of pieces that go together rather than match exactly.

Mix it Up

The key is to visually break things up. Avoid putting everyone in the same colors or solids top to bottom. Mix up tones, textures, and styles for a natural, elevated look. And stay away from bright neons or colors.

Add Layers

Layers, accessories, and subtle patterns bring texture, depth, and interest to your photos. Think jackets, cardigans, hats, belts, jewelry, or your dog. Just a piece or two can make a big difference in the overall family photos.

For Women

For women, long, flowy dresses or skirts are universally flattering and look beautiful on camera, adding softness, movement, and dimension. Cocktail-length dresses, midi skirts, and even jeans or tailored slacks can also work well. Choose what feels good and looks great.

For Men

For men, dress shirts, slacks, and a sport coat elevate the look and photograph well. Long sleeves are more flattering than short, and I recommend avoiding polos or t-shirts. Layering with sweaters and jackets is also a great idea.

For the Kids

For kids, don’t feel like their outfits need to match. Variety adds interest! Mixing wardrobe pieces creates fun, layered visuals.

prepping the little ones

Happy kids equal happy photos

Pack a small bag with water, favorite snacks, and anything that might help capture their attention (like a small toy or stuffed animal).
If your kids are old enough, set expectations ahead of time. Let them know how special the photos are to you and plan something fun afterward—like ice cream or their favorite dinner—as a reward.

Make sure they’re fed and well-rested beforehand. And don’t stress because kids will be kids! I have over 10 years of experience working with little ones and know how to create great photos.

prepping your spouse

Even if photos aren’t their favorite thing, you are

Most spouses are hesitant to take photos because they’ve had awkward or stressful photo experiences in the past. Take a few minutes to tell them why this session means something to you.

I hear it all the time: “I’m not good at taking photos,” but by the end, most people are surprised at how fun and easy my sessions are. We’ve got this—just bring them along and I’ll take care of the rest.
